About

About Us

Cal Esports is UC Berkeley's official esports program. After university administration saw the rapid increase in demand for gaming on campus, as well as the proven success of our esports teams that had won multiple national championships, they decided it was time to fully integrate esports into UC Berkeley's campus life. In June 2017, multiple student leaders and their respective communities' efforts had paid off as UC Berkeley's Rec Sports Program officially adopted esports as a recreational sport.

Our goal is to redefine what it means to be a student-athlete and gamer at UC Berkeley, providing opportunities to students to explore their passion for competition in gaming.

Our Pillars

 Community
We believe in community above all else. At the end of the day, we want to create an environment for the gaming community at UC Berkeley to come together, have fun, and learn. We want our competitive teams to form lifelong friendships admist the challenges of competition. We decided to name our facility the Cal Esports Community Center, because we believe that it will be a place for our community to grow and flourish.
 Competition
Cal Esports has the most national championships out of any collegiate esports program in the nation, and we want to continue the tradition of being the best, by providing our teams the tools they'll need to succeed. We provide jerseys, peripherals, access to the community center, and travel expenses to our competitive teams. In addition, our Division 1 League of Legends team have been provided scholarships.
 Lifelong Learning
UC Berkeley is the nation's top public school and its academic program is prestigious. Cal Esports seeks to uphold that precedent of academic success through various topics of gaming. Currently, our Decal program offers student-lead accredited courses that focus on a holistic approach to gaming. All courses are managed by student leads and are monitored by designated faculty members.
 Wellness
We believe in making sure that our players are physical and mentally healthy. We understand the rigor of UC Berkeley academics along with the pressures that may arise from competition. We encourage our teams to do team-bonding activities and more..
 Social Good
We really believe in doing good for people outside of our community. We're an active member of Cal's Social Good program, and we make sure that when possible our events contribute to a charitable cause. Last year, a charity stream with SF Shock raised $3000 to deliver games to recovering children in hospitals!

Our Principles

 Respect For All
We are a great community filled with respect, compassion, and acceptance of all ethnicities, religions, identities, and genders. We recognize the dignity of fellow students and competitors. All are welcome regardless of personal or gaming differences.
 Personal Growth
We strengthen ourselves out of own volition by constantly improving our behavior, attitude, and gameplay.
 Confidence with Humility
We demonstrate our traits as champions by being humble in victory and gracious in defeat. We strive to be the best without arrogance and through collaboration.
 Community First
We recognize the importance of family and friendship over competition. All our actions and efforts are designed to give back to the community that supports us.
 Empower Others
We leverage our capabilities and strengths as people and gamers to bring comfort to those around us. We share our breadth of knowledge and resources to bring the best out in others.

FAQ

How can I join Cal Esports?
At the moment, we only accept for our teams, current Berkeley students who have been admitted through the traditional application process. If you are a Berkeley student enrolled in courses, then all you have to do is show up to tryouts and impress us. For those who want to join the gaming community, we also host casual events and we recommend you to check out the various gaming clubs on campus and their communities!
Why did the university decide to invest in esports and create an esports center?
We listened to student feedback, and found there was a high-level of campus excitement around the concept of having a dedicated space for esports. One example of this engagement includes the excitement over the Cal Overwatch esports team recently competing in a national tournament in Arizona. In addition, the university views student wellness with a holistic approach, and this includes opportunities for student to engage in healthy social activities such as esports – but also our many other student organizations, athletic and recreational sports, Cal Greeks organizations, etc.
Will the center be open to the external community?
At the moment, the center is only open to current Cal students, staff, and faculty. we do plan to eventually open up the center to the general public as well. For now, the general public can play at the center when third party organizations such as clubs host events. However for special occasions, guests can be accomodated so please contact us to let us know why you're visiting!
With concerns about campus housing capacity, why does it make sense to have an esports community center?
Foothill Academic Center, is not a living space, so no campus bed spaces are being impacted by this. We recognize that Berkeley can be a challenging place for student to secure housing, and there are campus efforts underway (such as new and planned construction of housing in other locations) to address this.
What is the capacity? How many people will the new space hold?
For events where gaming stations aren’t required, such as TED-style talks or professional development events, the Cal Esports Community Center will have capacity for about 100-150 people. However, the number of students who can game at any given time will be determined by the number of gaming setups we will have. Currently, we have 54 gaming setups at the center and 2 additional setups for broadcasting.
How are you ensuring gender equity for the Cal Esports Community Center?
One of Student Affairs’ priorities is gender diversity in gaming. The Student Affairs’ Business Development team has established a working group, which includes representatives from the Women in Science & Engineering (WiSE) theme program, women who live in foothill, Residential Education, and students in the gaming community, to develop our Women in Gaming initiative. The Women in Gaming Initiative’s key goals include: equality, empowerment, and integration. The effort is still in the early stages and we will have more information to share as it develops.

In addition, our Cal Women In Gaming initative seeks to empower women within our gaming community. Through our program, we provide women a welcoming environment and introduction to the gaming industry.
Where do I sign up for a GGleap account?
GGLeap accounts are created at the front desk of the Community Center. Student staff will assist in account creation on-site, and your GGleap account can only be accessed at the Cal Esports Community Center.
Can I bring a friend or guest?
Yes! Friends and guests are welcome!
Will new games be added to the game library?
Yes, we are always listening and working with the Cal gaming community to offer the most widely-played and enjoyed games as possible. There is limited hard drive space on each computer however, so we are selective on game choices.
